Meghalaya: 5 screening centres set up to check people returning to State

GUWAHATI: People from Meghalaya who were stranded in different parts of Assam are returning back to the state. So far, over 100 people have been screened and allowed to enter the East Khasi Hills district. A total of 5 screening centres have been set up at Umiam, Byrnihat, Ratacherra, Tikrikilla and Bajenjdoba. In-charge of Umiam screening point MR Marak informed Northeast Live that those screened also include truckers carrying essential commodities.

“So far, from 8 o’clock, around 140 people have registered here. This number includes 60-70 private vehicles and essential commodity vehicles,” said in-charge of Umiam screening point M R Marak.

Meanwhile, those who are returning to the state are also elated, especially those who are travelling due to medical emergencies.

“I am traveling from Guwahati, we were screened at Byrnihat. Due to a medical emergency, I am traveling to NEIGRIHMS hospital, Meghalaya,” said a person traveling from Guwahati to Shillong.

Around 4,000 people are expected to return to Meghalaya from different parts of Northeast. The Meghalaya government has also activated bus services from different parts of Assam and the transportation will continue till May 8.

The government through a notification has restricted inter-district travel among various districts till 11th of May.

Meghalaya CM Conrad K Sangma wrote in twitter,”Citizens of #Meghalaya stranded in other States outside the #NorthEast may register themselves at http://meghalayaonline.gov.in/covid.

They may also contact 8258811914, 7005728463, 8794064688, 9089171167, 897428912, 8974081984, 8575342904 & 9485103194 between 9AM-8PM to register.”

 

In another tweet Sangma tweeted, “The Govt. of Meghalaya will permit private vehicles to pick-up family members stranded in North East States. Citizens may register/apply by visiting: http://meghalayaonline.gov.in/covid

Meghalaya so far has witnessed 12 numbers of COVID positive cases. The first patient was a 69-year-old doctor from Shillong who died on 15th April at the Bethany Hospital in Shillong.
