7 militants arrested in Manipur in past 72 hours; pistol, ammunition and explosives recovered

The 7 militants were arrested in Manipur in four separate operations since March 8 (Saturday), Manipur Police posted on ‘X’.

GUWAHATI, March 11: As many as 7 militants have been arrested in Manipur during separate operations launched by security forces in the past 72 hours while a pistol, live ammunition and hand grenades were also recovered from the possession of the arrested militant leaders.

In the first incident, security forces arrested an active member of banned militant group United People’s Party of Kangleipak (UPPK) from Keirao Wangkhem, Ngariyan Chingkhong under Irilbung Police Station in Imphal East district on Monday.

The arrested militant leader was later identified as Ningombam Bonbon Singh alias Shamu (45).

Manipur Police said the arrested rebel leader was directly involved in extortion activities and targeted the general people, private firms and government officials besides his involvement in illegal transportation of arms and ammunition.

A .32 pistol with magazine and eight rounds of live ammunition were also seized from his possession.

On the other hand, in the second case, security forces arrested two cadres of KYKL from Wangoo Sabal under Kumbi Police Station on Bishnupur district of the State.

The arrested militant leaders have been identified as Pukhrambam Bimol Singh alias Inaobi (39) and Athokpam Surchandra Singh alias Khaba alias Rabichandra (42).

Two mobile phones and an Aadhaar Card each were seized from the arrested KYKL militants.

Manipur Police, in the third case, arrested two active cadres of RPF/PLA group from Kakching Bazar area under Kakching Police Station in Kakching district on Saturday (March 8).

The arrested militants were identified as Moirangthem Romen Singh alias Phirepa (23) of Moirang Bazar Maning Moiranghtem Leikai and Nongmaithem Mohendro Singh (54) of Kakching Thonglan who were involved in recruiting minor girls into their organisation.

A scooter and two mobile phone were seized from them.

Police also rescued two minor girls, one from Kakching Bazar area and the other from Wangbal Laikon area under Thoubal Police Station of Thoubal district who were later produced before the chairperson of Thoubal Child Welfare Committee.

In the fourth incident, Manipur Police arrested two cadres of KCP(PWG) militant outfit from Haobam Marak Keisham Leikai under Singjamei Police Station of Imphal West district.

The arrested cadres have been identified as Yambem Gulshan alias Naoba (30) and Philem Jenan Singh (32).

Police said they were directly involved in extortion from the general people and from shops and businesses.

Four hand grenades without detonators, two mobile phones, a sum of Rs 260 and a two-wheeler were recovered from their possession.
