Majuli witch-hunt: Court orders death sentence to one, life imprisonment to 11

GUWAHATI: The Court of Additional Sessions Judge in Jorhat on Friday pronounced death sentence to one and life imprisonment to eleven others in a horrific murder case that took place in 2012.

The convicts killed three persons of a family at Bordonga Mishing Gaon under Gormur police station in Majuli on August 28, 2012. They killed Rajkumar Doley and his wife Barnali Doley along with their son Jitu Doley and threw the bodies into the river.

The 12 accused in the case were convicted on Thursday by the Additional Sessions Judge Poly Kataki.

Sentencing Rajen Doley to death under Section 302 of the IPC (murder), Kataki ordered that he should “be hanged by the neck till he is dead”.

She also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on Rajen Doley.

Those sentenced to life imprisonment under Section 302 of the IPC include Anil Doley, Limai alias Nimai Doley, Atul Doley, Biswa Patir, Baku Doley, Biman Patir alias Birinchi, Bamun Doley, Raju Doley, Lakhindra Patir, Jan Doley and Janma Doley.

Kataki also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on all the 11 convicts.

On the other hand, another accused in the case, Pulin Doley, expired during the trial.

Meanwhile, Santanu Doley, the only survivor of the victim family expressed his satisfaction over the verdict.

“I am happy today. Because the killers of my parents and younger brother got punishment. I was studying at class 8 at Jengraimukh High School then. I was not at home that day and survived,” said Santanu.
