Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani re-arrested by Assam Police after getting bail

Guwahati: Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani has been re-arrested by the Assam Police moments after he was granted bail in a case over tweets against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He has now been arrested for allegedly assaulting officials.

Two new FIRs were registered against Mevani at two separate police stations in Assam – one in Barpeta and the other in Goalpara. The Vadgam legislator was reportedly taken to the Barpeta police station from Kokrajhar jail amid tight security.

“It’s very sad to know that police have arrived in Kokrajhar to re-arrest Jignesh Mevani in connection with a case filed against him in two more districts – Barpeta and Goalpara. We have heard that two fresh FIRs have been filed against him. We knew from before that this would happen and we are prepared for it,” Mevani’s lawyer Angshuman Bora told India Today TV.

The Independent MLA from Gujarat was arrested last week by the Assam police after a complaint was filed in the state over a purported tweet against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He was granted bail this afternoon by a local court in Assam.

Mevani, who has been quite vocal about his criticism of PM Modi and his government, was sent to three-day police custody after his arrest and was produced before a court on Sunday, which extended his custody by a day till today.

The Assam Police had registered a case against Mevani under non-bailable sections of the Indian Penal Code like conspiracy to create enmity between two communities, insulting the community, disturbing the atmosphere of peace based on a tweet he shared a few days ago.

“He has been sent to judicial custody. His case will be heard again in court tomorrow. We are hopeful that he will get bail,” Mevani’s lawyer said on Sunday.

The independent legislator was seen leaving the court in ‘Pushpa’ style, indicating with a gesture that he would never bow down or be cowed down.
