GUWAHATI: The number of COVID-19 fatalities has been rapidly rising in Assam in the last few days. Minister of state for health and family welfare Pijush Hazarika has attributed the sudden rise in death toll to the flouting of home isolation norms.

Talking to News Live, Hazarika said many patients approach hospitals at the last minute when their conditions deteriorate.

“The number of deaths has increased in the last few days. We have analysed the reasons and found that patients in home isolation reach hospitals at the last minute,” said the minister.

On Monday, 16 patients succumbed to the infection which took the state death toll to 578. So far, 1,59,320 COVID-19 cases have been reported in Assam.
