Botanical Garden at Old Jail premise in Fancy Bazar, CM lays foundation stone

Guwahati: A botanical garden  will be developed at the Old Jail premises in Fancy Bazar, Guwahati. Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday laid the foundation stone of the proposed botanical garden. The project area is spread over 56 bighas of land and will be developed at a cost of Rs 38.51 crore.

The chief minister planted saplings of ‘Rudraksh’ on the site. Assam Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Ashok Singhal and MP, Guwahati Lok Sabha constituency Queen Oja were present during the ceremony.

“The proposed Botanical Garden has been designed in such a way that it will provide much needed open space for people to breathe fresh air in the heart of the city,” said a CMO release.

Different species of plants with significant botanical importance will be a source of study and research for enthusiasts, conservationists and environmentalists.

The project aims at developing the garden with recreational activities for morning and evening walkers, meandering walkways, lotus ponds and amenities such as eateries.
