Assam: Thousands gather for Janaja in Nagaon flouting social distancing norms

GUWAHATI: At a time when the government has been appealing people to maintain social distanceto avoid COVID-19, tens of thousands gathered for a funeral function at Juria under middle Assam’s Nagaon district. The large number of people attended the Janaja of Mufti Khairul Islam who was the vice-president of All India Jamiat Ulema. The veteran religious leader was father of Dhing MLA Aminul Islam.

According to reports, the Janaja took place at Dagaon in Juria area. Though the government norms allow only 20 people to attend funeral function, thousands of people gathered at the venue for the Janaja of the religious leader. The attendees did not only flout social distancing norms, many of them were found without wearing a mask.

On the other hand, Lok Sabha MP from Nagaon constituency Pradyut Bordoloi also attended the Janaja which witnessed a huge congregation despite the government’s restrictions in view of COVID-19.
