Assam: AJP State Convention from today at Sivasagar

GUWAHATI: The two-day state convention of the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) started from today at Sivasagar. The political convention is being held at Sivasagar Boarding Field where the party will manifest itself as a full-fledged political entity.

Former general secretary of the All Assam Students’ Union Lurinjyoti Gogoi will join the newly-floated party on Thursday.

“The decision to take the political route has been taken after consultations with the students’ union, educationists, intellectuals and a cross-section of people and well-wishers,” Gogoi said while addressing the media in Guwahati on Monday.

“From the platform of an apolitical organisation, I have been raising issues at the state and political levels, pressing for the socio-political security of the greater Assamese community. However, none of the issues has been addressed. Absence of political foresightedness by the national parties has adversely affected regionalism and therefore an alternative—a united regional political force is imperative,” he said.

Patacharkuchi MLA who Pabindra Deka who had left the Asom Gana Parishad on Tuesday is also likely to join the new party during the convention.

The convention began with the hosting of the party flag by Dr. Krishna Gopal Bhattacharyya.
