Guwahati: Congress working president and three-time Karimganj MLA Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha and Mangaldoi MLA Basanta Das has extended support to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Assam Legislative Assembly ahead of the Lok Sabha Election 2024.
Purkayastha, has stepped down as the working president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC).
Speaking to the media Purkayastha said that he is supporting BJP for the development of the state and he will do so without leaving the Congress party.
Purkayastha and Das along with BJP MLA Pijush Hajarika will be meeting Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma shortly.
Along with Purkayastha, Das also addressed a press conference and expressed their open support to the BJP government by staying in the Congress.
Purkayastha started his political journey with NSUI, the student wing of the Congress party. Later he joined the Youth Congress and eventually became an MLA from Karimganj district in 2011.
Amidst a saffron storm in the state in 2016, Purkayastha was able to win his North Karimganj assembly constituency for the second time. He won the same seat again in 2021 and became the working president of Congress in Assam.
Purkayastha and Das has announce his support for the BJP without resigning from the Congress so that they does not lose the MLA post as of now.
