The Assam Assembly on Monday (June 9) unanimously passed a resolution to rename Dibrugarh airport as Dr Bhupen Hazarika Airport.

The resolution, which was passed during the day-long special session of the Assam Assembly, will now be forward to the central government for necessary action.

“Assam has two Bharat Ratnas — Bhupen Hazarika and Assam’s first Chief Minister Gopinath Bordoloi. We have decided to name the airports in the two state capitals — Guwahati and Dibrugarh — after them,” Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma said while moving the resolution in the assembly.

The renaming of the domestic airport at Mohanbari has been planned as part of the year-long birth centenary celebrations of Bharat Ratna Dr Bhupen Hazarika, also known as the Bard of the Brahmaputra, which will kick-off on September 8 this year.

Dr Bhupen Hazarika, fondly addressed as Bhupen Da, was born in Sadia on September 8, 1926.

The Assam cabinet had earlier approved another resolution to rename Dibrugarh airport in the honour of the Xudhakontho.

Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, while moving the resolution in the assembly, spoke in detail about the elaborate plans to celebrate Dr Bhupen Hazarika’s birth centenary celebrations, saying that the inaugural function will be held at the Khanapara playground which will be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

1,000 youths will also perform Xudhakontho’s iconic song ‘Axom Amaar Rupohi…’, Chief Minister Dr Sarma stated.

Work on a commemorative biographical account on the great balladeer, which is being edited by eminent litterateur and journalist Anuradha Sharma Pujaree, is also nearing completion.

The book will be translated into 23 Indian languages and distributed across four lakh libraries, colleges, universities, and government offices, Chief Minister Dr Sarma further stated.

He further said that the government is planning to name the airport in Tezpur after Jyoti Prasad Agarwala and Bishnu Prasad Rabha.
