Will be happy if my arrest resolves Assam-Mizoram border dispute, says Assam CM

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday said he would be very happy if his arrest resolves the ongoing Assam-Mizoram border dispute.

Addressing a press meet on Sunday CM Sarma said that if filing an FIR against him in the Assam-Mizoram border dispute would help resolve the issue, then he would be “happy and walk to the police station, and hold a padayatra”.

“I am very happy if filing an FIR against me can resolve the Assam-Mizoram border dispute. If the police gives me notice, then I will go and join the investigation. I will go from Silchar to Vairengte and will join the investigation. If the Mizoram Police arrests me, I will not go to seek interim bail from the Gauhati High Court,” CM Sarma said.

The Assam Chief Minister said he had called his Mizoram counterpart Zoramthanga about 18 to 20 times since July 26, and that he was ready for talks with the leader.

“If CM Zoramthanga calls me, then I will definitely answer, and help him in every way possible. But he has not called me,” CM Sarma said.

Talking about the investigation, Sarma said that in the case of loss of lives, a probe has to be conducted by either the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) or the National Investigation Agency (NIA), adding that the “families of the dead will want a closure.”

“So, it will be better that the case is investigated not by Assam or Mizoram Police but by a third party,” the CM said.

CM  Sarma also added that if Mizoram Police wanted to arrest him, he would be fine with it.

“I will not seek an interim bail. I don’t mind getting arrested to protect my officers,” the Chief Minister said.

Assam is ready to file a case on Mizoram over border dispute, said CM Sarma. He also urged the Neutral Force to take the matter into their hands.

Moreover, Assam will also file a case in Supreme Court within 10-15 days.

“The lawyer is making the necessary documents simultaneously,” he added.

CM Sarma said that there is no way Assam will do a economic blockade against Mizoram.
