GUWAHATI: Majuli, the first and only island district of the country has isolated itself in the wake of Coronavirus outbreak. The district administration of the river island has banned plying of all the ferries, country boats or any other means of water transport (except emergency services) connecting Majuli with effect from Saturday until further order.
However, the boat ambulances will continue to operate.
“In case of medical emergency, patients and their family may contact district administration and district disaster management authority, Majuli,” stated in an order issued by Majuli deputy commissioner Bikram Kairi.
It further mentioned that any violation of the order would lead to prosecution under DDMA Act 2008, epidemic Disaster Act, 1887 and other relevant orders and rules including Section 188 of Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Alert was sounded in Majuli after it came to light that an American tourist who tested positive for Coronavirus in Bhutan had visited Majuli and took a cruise to Guwahati. District authorities took immediate preventive measures in the river island as it attracts thousands of domestic and foreign tourists every year.
