Top 10 grossing Bollywood movies of 2019

Guwahati: Bollywood movie makers faced some tough competition from the West this year. We would be lying if we didn’t say that one of the best films of 2019 came from Hollywood. With anticipation through the roof, Avengers: Endgame supplanting “Avatar” as the highest-grossing film in history lived up to the hype and at the same time triumphed all Bollywood films this year to emerge with the highest lifetime collection of Rs 373.22 crore at the domestic and worldwide box office and also broke multiple box office records. 

Still movies like WAR worked mainly on Hrithik Roshan and Tiger Shroff’s fanbase. Kabir Singh, which was the remake of Telugu blockbuster Arjun Reddy, worked despite a lot of criticisms for the film, especially by a certain section of the society. So, let’s have a look which 10 movies dominated the box office as well as broke stereotypes and brought something new for the audience to cheer for. 

War (474.79 Crores)

 The Siddharth Anand’s action-thriller produced by YRF stars Hrithik Roshan and Tiger Shroff, and follows an Indian soldier assigned to eliminate his former mentor who has gone rogue. Vaani Kapoor can be seen playing Hrithik’s love interest in the movie. The film made an overall business of Rs 474 crores.

Kabir Singh (379.02 Crore)

Amidst controversies, Sandeep Vanga directorial and Shahid Kapoor-Kiara Advani starrer Kabir Singh, which released in June, became the highest-grossing film for a brief period of time. It also gave Shahid Kapoor due as an actor. Kabir Singh had minted Rs. 379.02 crore at the Box Office. Kabir Singh was a remake of the Telugu film; Arjun Reddy was ranked second in the highest-grossing Hindi films list.

 Uri: The Surgical Strike (342.06 Crore)

Vicky Kaushal’s URI: The Surgical Strike was a fever when it released on January 11, 2019. ‘How’s The Josh’ was a slogan that every other person said out loud. Yami Gautam, Paresh Rawal, Kriti Kulhari can be seen playing pivotal roles in the movie.  This craze made URI the first highest-grossing film of 2019 with Rs. 342.06crore.

Bharat (325.57 Crore)

Katrina Kaif and Salman Khan paired up once again to create a film that didn’t win any praises from critics but made a lot of money.  The Ali Abbas Zafar directorial tells about the life of a common man who follows his life from eight to 70 years. Tabu, Sunil Grover, Disha Patani and Jackie Shroff also play key roles in the film that raked Rs 325 crore at the box office.

Mission Mangal (290.02 Crore)

The Jagan Shakti Mission Mangal is a sci-fi movie that is based on the life of scientists at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) who contributed to Mars Orbiter Mission—India’s first exemplary expedition. Akshay Kumar, Vidya Balan, Taapsee Pannu, Sonakshi Sinha, Nithya Menon, Kirti Kulhari and Sharman Joshi starrer Mission Mangal minted Rs. 290.67 crore and became the sixth-highest-grossing film of 2019.

Housefull 4 (278.76 Crore)

The Farhad Samji multi-starrer tells the story of three men who are considered useless, teams up with their girlfriends to steal money from a mafia don. Produced by Sajid Nadiadwala, the film stars Akshay Kumar, Riteish Deshmukh, Bobby Deol, Kriti Sanon, Pooja Hegde and Kriti Kharbanda in lead roles.The fourth installment of the Housefull 4 franchise didn’t receive good reviews, but still managed to rake Rs 278 crore at the box office.

Gully Boy (238.16 Crore)

The Zoya Akhtar’s directorial is inspired by the lives of Indian street rappers Divine and Naezy. Featuring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt in lead roles, the film revolves around the life of an aspiring street rapper from Dharavi slums in Mumbai. Produced by Farhan Akhtar and co. the film raked Rs 238.16 crore at the box office and received India’s official entry to the Oscars 2020.

Total Dhamaal (228.27 crore)

In the third installment of the comedy entertainer franchise Dhamaal, Indra Kumar brought the iconic duo, Anil Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit Nene on the big screen once again. The film also stars Ajay Devgn, Riteish Deshmukh, Arshad Warsi and Jaaved Jaaferi in important roles. The film earned Rs 228.27 crore.

Chhichhore (212.67 Crore)

This nostalgic movie starring Shraddha Kapoor and Sushant Singh Rajput had viewers reuniting with old friends. The story tells us about the lives of seven campus friends and the changes they undergo after completing their studies. It also shows their reunion when one of the friends meets with an accident. The film is produced by Sajid Nadiadwala and produced by Nitesh Tiwari. The college drama raked over Rs 212.67 crore at the box office.

 Super 30 (208.93 Crore)

Based on the life of mathematician Anand Kumar, the film had an uplifting storyline. Vikas Bahl directorial features Hrithik Roshan in a never seen before avatar. Co-produced by Sajid Nadiadwala, the film managed to rake over Rs 208.93 crore at the box office. The film also stars Pankaj Tripathi in pivotal roles.
