Today is International Men’s Day

PUBLISHED:

Guwahati: Every year on November 19, International Men’s Day is celebrated across the world to appreciate men and boys for their contribution to the nation and society.

International Men’s Day is celebrated to honour the men who are making positive changes in society while raising awareness for issues faced by gender.

This year the theme for the day is ‘Better health for men and boys’.

In view of the COVID-19 situation across the world, the theme for International Men’s Day 2020 is “Better health for men and boys.” COVID-19 has not only affected the physical health of people but also mental health. So, this International Men’s Day, we should check if males in our family and friends are focusing on their health and following a healthy routine.

International Men’s Day history

The day was launched in 1992 on 7th February by Thomas Oaster. In 1999, the event was revived by Jerome Teelucksing. He chose 19th November to honour his father’s birthday and also to celebrate how on that date in 1989, Trinidad and Tobago’s football team had united the country with their endeavours to qualify for the World Cup.

In India, the inaugural celebration of the day was organised by the leading Indian Men’s rights organisation, Indian Family on 19th November 2007. Since then, the day has been celebrated every year.

Why Celebrate International Men’s Day:

Like women, men across the globe battle stereotypes every day. From being asked to “man up” to being equated with women for being expressive and emotional, men find themselves in the centre of societal norms in several situations.

There is no doubt that gender disparity exists in our society. Women face discrimination in many walks of life. But, all men are also not that privileged. They are victims of patriarchy, societal norms and mental health. Besides, suicide among males is a cause for concern. According to a survey, suicide is more common in men than women in all countries.

This particular day also provides an opportunity to recognise men, gay and bisexual men and transgender.

How to Celebrate the Day

As we all know that we are going through a tough time due to the pandemic and it’s not safe to step out of the house without any emergencies we can celebrate the day with the male in our lives at home itself.  It can be our fathers, brothers, male friends, husbands or any other male friend by just making them feel their importance in your life.

One can talk to one’s father, brother, husband or friend about their struggles of personal or professional life. If they are not following a healthy routine, one can suggest to them that they should do so. People can ask males in their families to do exercise to keep themselves healthy and fit. Last but not the least, you can cook good food for them today.
