GUWAHATI: As if the outbreak of novel coronavirus or COVID-19 and the subsequent lockdown was not enough, pork lovers in Assam might feel crestfallen after going through this news.

In what has come in as a bolt from the blue, people will now have to keep away from pork with the Assam Animal Husbandry and Veterinary department announcing a strict ban on sale of pigs and pork.
As many as 1,964 pigs have so far died from what is being ascribed to as swine fever in several eastern Assam districts.

“There has been 1,964 deaths of pigs in Assam. We have sent samples to Bhopal for necessary tests. As a precautionary measure, we have banned sale of pigs and pork in the State with immediate effect,” Assam Agriculture and Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Minister Atul Bora said in Guwahati.

“We have also launched vaccination of pigs. We are monitoring the situation,” he added.
