Guwahati: Congress Mariani MLA from Mariani, Rupjyoti Kurmi, submits resignation to Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary.
Kurmi was accompanied by two BJP MLAs, minister Pijush Hazarika and Jayanta Malla Baruah. Hazarika and Baruah were earlier in Congress with Kurmi.
Speaking to the media Kurmi said, “I have submitted my resignation to Assembly speaker Biswajit Daimary and will join BJP on Monday in presence of CM Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma”
Kurmi also added, “I’m leaving Congress as High Command in Delhi and Guwahati leaders give priority to elderly leaders only. We’d told them Congress has a good chance of coming to power this time and we shouldn’t forge an alliance with AIUDF as it would be a mistake. Congress isn’t listening to its young leaders. That’s why its situation is worsening in all states. Rahul Gandhi is unable to shoulder leadership. If he’s at the helm, the party won’t move forward”.
Two days back, the Congress MLA reportedly had a confidential meeting with the Assam BJP leadership.
Kurmi was recently chosen as the secretary of the Congress Legislature Party but he refused to accept the post.
Kurmi had demanded the post of APCC president from the party high command.
