GUWAHATI: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Bhubaneswar Kalita and common candidate of Congress and All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) Ajit Kumar Bhuyan will file their nominations today for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections in Assam.

Today is the last day of filing nomination papers for the elections which are scheduled to be held on March 26.

Former Congress leader Bhubaneswar Kalita resigned from Rajya Sabha and joined BJP in August, 2019. BJP announced Kalita as its first candidate on Wednesday.

On the other hand, leader of BJP’s ally Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) and current Rajya Sabha MP Biswajit Daimary filed his nomination papers on Wednesday seeking re-election to the upper house of the parliament.

Assam’s senior journalist-cum-activist Ajit Kumar Bhuyan will contest for the third seat as a consensus candidate of Congress and Maulana Badaruddin Ajmal-led AIUDF. Bhuyan wrote to Congress and AIUDF seeking support for the Rajya Sabha elections and subsequently his name as a common candidate was announced by APCC president Ripun Bora and AIUDF MLA Hafiz Bashir Ahmed Qasimi on March 11.
