GUWAHATI: After favouring formation of a new political party during the Citizenship Amendment Act agitation, singer Zubeen Garg has now changed his stance. Zubeen clearly stated on Tuesday that politics is not for people like him and he will not enter politics.
“I will not enter politics and never did. Somebody may want to do it or think about it. But politics is a tough job and there is no benefit in it for people like us. The best job would be to able to work with the people,” said Zubeen Garg.
“We already have local parties engaged in politics. I think, these days we should come up globally,” added Zubeen.
Assam’s cultural heartthrob Zubeen Garg spearheaded the CAA protests in Guwahati and was one of the vocal proponents during the agitation.
Former Assam Chief Minister and veteran Congress leader Tarun Gogoi had proposed the name of Zubeen Garg for the Rajya Sabha Election in Assam held on 26 March.
In December 2019, Zubeen had hinted the formation of a political party during a speech made at the Assam Engineering Institute playground in Guwahati at a protest meeting attended by singers, artistes and film and cultural personalities.
Zubeen along with singers, film personalities, artistes and cultural activists from Assam held unique protest through songs and music at the Assam Engineering Institute (AEI) playground at Chandmari, Guwahati.
The All Assam Students Union leadership also extended their support to the cultural protest with AASU chief adviser Samujjal Bhattacharya, president Dipanka Kumar Nath and general secretary Lurin Jyoti Gogoi, among others, taking part in the programme attended by thousands of people lasting for many days.
Similar cultural protests were organised in other parts of Assam to oppose the Citizenship (Amendment) Act. The Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), the provisions of the Act, came into effect from 10th January, 2020 following a gazette notification issued by the Union Home Ministry.
