GUWAHATI, Oct 18: The Kamrup (Metro) district administration and the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) today launched a joint operation against petty traders plying their trade on the busy SS Road in Fancy Bazaar.
Besides evicting traders, officials also seized packets of clothes the traders had brought for today’s sale leading to a war of words between the traders and the raid team.
With Fancy Bazaar chockablock with Puja shoppers, the sudden drive launched to clear the public road led to mixed reactions with some welcoming the move while many claimed the administration could have been somewhat lenient considering the festive environment.
“Considering the festive environment and the fact that many people come to these roadside traders to buy clothes, authorities could have been somewhat lenient and not seize their stocks,” a customer who had come for her Durga Puja shopping said.
“Our businesses were not that good. Now GMC’s crackdown will make matters worse for us,” a trader who used to sell his goods at SS Road said after the eviction drive.
