GUWAHATI: Former Lok Sabha speaker and ex-chief minister of Meghalaya Purno Agitok Sangma is being fondly remembered on his 73rd birth anniversary.
Remembering his father, Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma tweeted, “A true believer in people’s ability & a propagator of the North East whose legacy lives on. Baba, you will always be there with us. We will continue your legacy by serving our people just like you did.”
PA Sangma passed away March 4 in 2016, in Delhi at the age of 68. The former LS Speaker died of a heart attack.
Paying his tribute to the popular leader, Assam health, finance and education minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote, “My reverence & tribute to Late Sri PA Sangma. He was a towering leader who left an indelible mark on functioning of the Indian Parliament. On his birth anniversary, I recall with pride his enormous contribution in bringing the North East to the mainstream.”
On the other hand, the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) along with the Regional Institute of Science and Technology (RIST) jointly paid floral tribute to Sangma at both the institution’s head office ERD Foundation in Guwahati.
Mahbubul Hoque, chancellor, Dr. Mridul Hazarika, vice chancellor of the USTM and other administrative officials of both the institutions were present at the event. The event started with a welcome note by Dr. Mridul Hazarika. It was followed by a brief speech of chancellor Mahbubul Hoque.
Paying tribute to the former Meghalaya CM, Hoque said, “His mentorship and immense support in the development of USTM and RIST will never be forgotten.”
“He was a great man with a golden heart”, he added.
