GUWAHATI: The National People’s Party (NPP) led by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma will contest in the upcoming Assam Assembly Elections. NPP will nominate candidates in about 10 seats and has declared for Chabua, Badarpur, Jorhat, Baithalangso and Naoboicha. As of now, contestants include Abu Sahid Md. Zakir Hussain from Badarpur constituency, Velcome Teron from Baithalangso and Biri Joy from Naoboicha.
It is to be mentioned that Arbin Kumar Baruah couldn’t submit his nomination as he met with an accident while traveling to Jorhat and is currently undergoing treatment in hospital informed Biswajit Baruah, NPP Assam State vice president. Also, Bhaben Baruah who had recently joined NPP has left and joined the Raijor Dal.
Speaking at a press meet at NPP office in Guwahati, Biswajit Baruah said, “It was all of a sudden, NPP formed a state committee and under the initiative of Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma we decided to contest in Assam Legislative Assembly Elections 2021. Our first list was published on Monday (8 March). Five contestants’ names were declared by our party for contesting in the Assam Assembly Elections but due to some issues Bhaben Baruah of Chabua constituency and Arbin Kumar Baruah of Jorhat constituency will not contest from our party in the upcoming election.”
“Our candidates are contesting from the constituencies where our party members are active and we have not provided party tickets in areas where we have not done any developmental works. For example, in seats like Naoboicha, Goalpara, Mankachar area our party has been active in several ways so our candidates will be contesting from these areas,” said State General Secretary Abul Hussain.
“Education and development is our first focus. We want to take the education part to a different level. The more people’s knowledge will increase the development will also rise accordingly. We have a different and new approach and that is what we are focusing on,” said Raj Prasad Saikia, state secretary, NPP Assam.
