Issue of Aadhar cards in Assam will see some fresh rules come into effect very soon with Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma mulling tougher measures to ensure Bangladeshi immigrants cannot get Aadhar cards issued in their name.

As per the new measures being considered by the government, Aadhar cards to adults (citizens above 18 years) in Assam will be issued only by the District Commissioners (DCs), Chief Minister Dr Sarma announced.

“Very soon we will implement a decision where Aadhar cards to adult citizens will be issued only by DCs. This will ensure that no illegal immigrant can get an Aadhar made and we can track and push them back easily,” Chief Minister Dr Sarma said during a press briefing in Guwahati today (June 27).

“Since the issue of Aadhar cards to adults has almost been completed and Aadhar cards are now mostly being issued to minors, we are contemplating the changes to ensure that Bangladeshi immigrants cannot get the document made in their name,” he added.

“We will discuss the issue more comprehensively in our next cabinet meeting and then formulate necessary guidelines,” Dr sarma further said.

The Assam Chief Minister also announced that the government’s vigil along the Indo-Bangladesh border continues and that security forces pushed back 20 more Bangladeshis last night as part of the ongoing efforts to detect and push back illegal infiltrators.
