Guwahati: The Mumbai Police Cyber Cell on Wednesday (November 10) arrested a man from Hyderabad for giving online rape threats to the nine-month-old daughter of cricketer Virat Kohli and actress Anushka Sharma.

According to local media reports, 23-year-old Ramnagesh Srinivas Akubathini who was arrested is an software engineer who lives in Hyderabad. After screenshots of his alleged rape threat went viral on social media, he reportedly changed his name on Twitter to pose as a resident of Pakistan. An Indian fact-checking website later identified him as Indian.

Reportedly, the accused is being brought to Mumbai where he will be produced before a court.

Kohli’s daughter had received rape threats following team India’s loss against Pakistan in ICC T20 World Cup 2021.

Earlier this month, the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) had sent a notice to the Delhi Police seeking a response over rape threats made to Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma’s daughter on social media.

In the notice issued to the Deputy Commissioner of Delhi Police Cyber Crime Branch, the DCW had demanded that immediate action be taken against the online troll.

It has been reported that online rape threats directed at Kohli’s nine-month-old daughter were being issued since the team’s defeat in the recent India-Pakistan cricket match in the ongoing T20 World Cup, the DCW said in the notice.

“It is learnt that he is being also attacked since he spoke against the incessant trolling of his teammate Md. Shami who was targeted for his religion by online trolls,” said DCW chairperson Swati Maliwal.

“This is very serious matter and attracts immediate action,” she said.
