Mount Harriet at Kalapani in Andaman & Nicobar Islands renamed as Mount Manipur

Guwahati: In honour to the freedom fighters from Manipur, the Mount Harriet at Kalapani in Andaman and Nicobar Islands will be renamed as Mount Manipur, announced Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday.

Shah announced this as a part of Azadi ka Amrut Mahotsav while addressing a public rally at Port Blair in Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

The central minister said that the Mount Harriet, where Manipur’s Maharaja Kulchandra Dhwaj Singh and 22 other freedom fighters were imprisoned, would be renamed Mount Manipur in their honor.

Furthermore, the central government has stated that it will support the Manipur government in the construction of a memorial site at Mount Manipur in the Andaman Nicobar Islands.

Expressing happiness to the announcement  Manipur  Chief Minister N.Biren Singh wrote, “In a fitting tribute to Maharaja Kulachandra & other Manipuri freedom fighters imprisoned at Mt Harriet in Kalapani, Hon’ HM Sh @AmitShah Ji has renamed Mt Harriet as Mt Manipur. We’re immensely thankful to PM @narendramodi Ji & Amit Shah Ji for such a great honour of our heroes.”

Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma also took his twitter to thank PM Modi and Shah for giving a fitting tribute to roles played by Maharaja Kulachandra & other freedom fighters from NE region.

“Renaming of Mt Harriet in Andaman & Nicobar as Mt Manipur is a fitting tribute to roles played by Maharaja Kulachandra & other freedom fighters from NE region. On occasion of Azadi ka Amrutmahautsav, we thank Adarniya @narendramodiji & @amitshahji’s for this historic decision”, tweeted CM Sarma.
