GUWAHATI, Jan 27: The life of a man from Mumbai turned upside down after he was wrongly detained in Durg, Chhattisgarh, as a suspect in the Saif Ali Khan attack case following an error made by Mumbai Police.
Thirty-one-year-old Akash Kanojia, a driver, was detained from the Mumbai Lokmanya Tilak Terminus-Kolkata Shalimar Jnaneshwari Express at Durg railway station by an RFP team on January 18 following a tip-off from Mumbai police.
However, he was released after Mumbai Police arrested a Bangladeshi national named Mohammed Shariful Islam Shahzad who, Mumbai Police later said, was the actual attacker.
Kanojia said he was on his way to meet his prospective bride when he was detained. He further alleged that he was even assaulted by Mumbai Police personnel who went to Chhattisgarh capital Raipur where he was taken to from Durg.
It was as if hell let loose on him after his detention following the mistake by Mumbai Police. His employer told him not to report to work while his bride-to-be and her family snapped marriage talks after his detention amid the false alarm.
“I now want justice,” he was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.
“I plan to stand outside Saif Ai Khan’s building and seek a job as I have lost everything because of what happened to him,” the PTI report further stated.
