Lockdown in Assam: Violation will lead to imprisonment up to 2 years

GUWAHATI: Assam government has declared a lockdown to prevent the spread of Coronavirus in the state. The lockdown will begin from 6 PM on March 24 till March 31.

State government will take strict action if anyone is found violating the order.

Addressing a press meet in Guwahati, Assam health minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the violations of the lockdown will invite penalties under different sections of Indian Penal Code (IPC).

“People will not be allowed to come out to the streets. They will have to stay at home,”said minister Sarma

“In the first instance, the violation will lead to 6 months of imprisonment. If the person is found violating the lockdown for the second time, he/she may be imprisoned upto 2 years or fine or both,” Dr. Sarma added.

He also stated that Assam Police will take strict action immediately against the violators of the law.
