GUWAHATI: Assam chief minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma has expressed grief over the demise of veteran Assamese litterateur Lakshmi Nandan Bora.
Taking to Twitter, Dr Sarma said the last rites of Bora would be performed with full state honours.
“It has been decided to perform the last rites of late Lakshmi Nandan Bora with state honours. Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary has been bestowed with the responsibilities to make the necessary arrangements,” Sarma stated.

The chief minister termed the death of the eminent litterateur as the end of a splendid chapter of Assam’s literature.
Sahitya Akademi and Padma Shri awardee Lakshmi Nandan Bora breathed his last on Thursday morning at Excelcare Hospital in Guwahati.
Bora, former president of Asom Sahitya Sabha penned many award winning novels including Patal Bhairavi, Ganga Chilonir Pakhi and Kayakalpa. A recipient of Sahitya Academy Award and Saraswati Samman, Bora was honoured by the Government of India in 2015 with Padma Shri, the fourth highest Indian civilian award. He was also serving as the chief editor of Gariyashi, a monthly Assamese literary magazine till his demise.
The prominent writer was born on June 15, 1932. He did his schooling at Nagaon High School and graduated in physics from erstwhile Cotton College (Now Cotton University). He was a post-graduate in physics from Presidency College, Kolkata. He pursued doctoral studies in meteorology at Andhra University. Lakhmi Nandan Bora was the first person to be awarded a doctoral degree in meteorology by the university.
For most of his career he worked at Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat as a faculty member.
He has also served as a visiting professor at the Johannes Gutenberg University for two terms.
