Guwahati, Dec 22: Various organisations of Koch Rajbongshi community have welcomed the Assam cabinet’s decision to form Kamatapur Autonomous Council for the community residing in erstwhile undivided Goalpara district.
“We express our thankfulness to the government of Assam for the cabinet decision to form Kamatapur Autonomous Council. We also thank the government for responding to our demand to name the council as Kamatapur Autonomous Council because we have been demanding for separate Kamatapur state,” said All Assam Koch Rajbongshi Students’ Union’s President, Gakul Barman.
Barman also expressed his gratitude to Chief minister of Assam Sarbananda Sonowal and Health and Finance Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma for the initiative.
On the other hand, welcoming the move, Chief Advisor of AKRSU(K) Hiteswar Barman said, “Government has been compelled to think over our demand of historic Kamatapur.”
Meanwhile, Koch Rajbongshi Sangram Samiti President Atul Ray said, “It is immensely good news for us. We thank the government of Assam for the initiative to form the autonomous council since the Koch Rajbongshi people of this area are very underdeveloped.”
Ray further demanded to expedite the process of granting ST status to the Koch Rajbonsghi community.
