Jawan Review: Shah Rukh Khan Leads a Messy, Massy Film With a Message, Fans call it a ‘masterpiece’

PUBLISHED:

And Shah Rukh Khan is back with a bang! After his blockbuster hit ‘Pathaan’, SRK returns to the silver screen with his next ‘Jawan.’

A revenge saga driven by personal and professional motives with each side further infuriated because their loved ones are dragged into the fire is a common trope. But Atlee’s Jawan isn’t just another addition to the roster because it calls for mass appeal even before people enter a theatre.

With the film opening in cinema halls as early as 5 a.m. with fans lining up to catch the first-day first-show, Jawan is clearly on its way to making even bigger records at the box office.

Featuring Shah Rukh Khan, Nayanthara, and Vijay Sethupathi, in the lead, the film has captured the spotlight and ignited immense anticipation. With early morning shows starting from 6 am, fans flocked to theatres to catch a glimpse of Bollywood’s King Khan exploding on the screen with his stellar acting and action.

For the most part, the film justifies the appeal – it embodies the very essence of massy, pan-Indian cinema.

Hereon, the film attempts to touch upon several timely social issues– from farmer suicide and income disparity to the dangers of a crumbling health infrastructure. While the film’s heart is set firmly in the right place, its usage of exposition is often unsettling.

This exposition is one of the reasons the film can come across as preachy instead of being an astute commentary about corruption and how power imbalances across societal structures affect every citizen.

One of the fans shared a still from the theatre and wrote, “Jawan First half done..The opening scene and Interval was filled with Goosebumps. SRK rocked…That interval twist #Atlee Master of mass…Waiting for the second Half.” Another user echoed similar sentiments and wrote, “Jawan WORKS well as a star-driven commercial action entertainer! #SRK especially shining in the different avatars! However, the rushed Atlee screenplay detailing its social messaging is shaky, sometimes forced.” A third user shared a video of the song Zinda Banda from the theatre and wrote, “If you haven’t seen the movie yet, trust me guys you are going see Megastar #ShahRuhKhan ‘s best entry scene ever, as well as not one, but THREE entry sequences.”

‘Jawan’, the much-awaited Shah Rukh Khan-starrer has finally hit cinemas today, on September 7. Directed by Atlee, the film features SRK in the lead roleThe film is touted to be a commercial entertainer and features the actor in a double role – an intelligence officer and a thief. The film was shot across Pune, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai, Rajasthan and Aurangabad. Anirudh Ravichander was chosen to compose for the film, and would thus mark his debut as a solo composer in Bollywood.

Jawan is a wholesome watch that won’t give you any dull moment. Keep your eyes and mind focused on screen for there’s a lot to take in and you don’t want to miss the action or know why it’s happening in the first place. Watch out for a climax that’s one paisa vasool moment.
