IPL Auction: Mitchell Starc overtakes Pat Cummins; gets signed for record ₹24.75 crore by KKR

PUBLISHED:

Moments after Australian World Cup-winning captain Pat Cummins became the costliest player in IPL history, his compatriot Mitchell Starc took up the baton from him. Starc was sold for Rs 24.75 crore after an intense bidding war between Kolkata Knight Riders and Gujarat Titans. Starc started at a base price of Rs 2.00 crore and was scoped by Kolkata Knight Riders at the end at the record-breaking price.

Earlier, Starc’s teammate and World Cup-winning captain Cummins was named the most expensive player in Indian Premier League (IPL) history when he was sold to Sunrisers Hyderabad at the ongoing IPL Auction 2024 on Tuesday, December 19. Starc will be playing in the IPL after an eight-year hiatus. He last played for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL back in 2015. He was also brought by KKR back in 2018 but withdrew his name from the tournament due to injuries.

Cummins broke the record of English player Sam Curran, who was sold to Punjab Kings in IPL Auction 2023 at a price of Rs 18.50 crore. But now, Starc holds the record for the most expensive IPL player.

Yuvraj Singh still holds the record for the most expensive Indian player at Rs 16 crore, when he was sold to Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) in 2015. The auction is being held at the Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai.
