GUWAHATI: The COVID-19 vaccination drive has started in Assam and 10 senior doctors of Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) have been given the vaccine. Assam Health Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma was present at the function at GMCH. Speaking to News Live the health minister said, “This is a day of pride for the country. Both the vaccines that we have taken are from India. We have taken the lead over developed nations of the world on how humanity can be served. We have shown today that India will always be ahead in the service of humanity. The vaccination drive through locally-made vaccines has proved India’s culture and determination towards serving the people of the world. This is a great and a pious moment for us.”
Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma cleared doubts on fake news regarding the vaccine, “Even during the COVID-19 fight we faced such a situation. They almost straitjacketed us to the level of defeating us through fake news. Today, the most prominent physicians of Assam have come forward to take the vaccine and have proven that such news has no base or reality. This is a safe vaccine and is manufactured to serve humanity.”

The Assam Health Minister further stated that for now around 3 lakh people will be vaccinated in the first stage — 1,90,000 health workers and one lakh police, fire service and cleaning staff. In the next stage people over 50 years of age will be vaccinated.
