India logs 90,928 new COVID-19 cases, positivity rate stands at 6.43 pc

India reported 90,928 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours (56.5 percent higher than yesterday’s 58,097 cases), taking the country’s tally since the pandemic began last year to 3.5 crore.

The death toll jumped to 4,82,876 with 325 fresh fatalities.

According to Union Health Ministry data released on Thursday (January 6), the total active cases in the country rose to 2,85,401.

This is the 9th consecutive day that India saw a rise in the daily Covid-19 case count.

The country has recorded a total of 19,206 recoveries in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of recoveries to 3,43,41,009, as per the official data.

The active cases comprise 0.81 per cent of the total infections, while India’s COVID-19 recovery rate is at 97.81 percent, the health ministry said.

The daily positivity rate was recorded at 6.43%.

The weekly positivity rate was recorded at 3.47%.

Meanwhile, India’s Omicron tally rose to 2,630 on Thursday (January 6).

The variant of concern that was first detected in South Africa in November has now spread to 26 states in India.

Among the 2,630 cases, Maharashtra reported the highest number of infections at 797, followed by Delhi at 465, Rajasthan at 236, Kerala at 234, and Karnataka at 226, as per the Health Ministry data.
