The ICC One Day International (ODI) World Cup will pick up where it left off as defending champions England are set to cross swords with last edition’s runners-up New Zealand in the 2023 tournament opener at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Thursday.
Reigning world champions England contested the mother of all finals against the Black Caps at the iconic Lord’s back in 2019. The summit clash finished tied and there was nothing separating the two sides even after the Super Over.
The two teams recently faced each other in a four-match series in England. The home side emerged victorious by a 3-1 margin. However, a lot of the top players were absent in the series from both sides. A World Cup game will be played with much more intensity and fans can expect a riveting affair to get the marquee event underway.
England’s first warm-up tie against India was abandoned without a ball being bowled. However, they got some game time against Bangladesh in the second warm-up fixture and won the rain-curtailed encounter by four wickets, via the Duckworth Louis-Stern method (DLS method). New Zealand, on the other hand, have had a fantastic start to their time in India as they defeated Pakistan and South Africa in their two warm-up games to enter the World Cup on a high.
