Himanta Biswa Sarma blames intellectuals for Aminul Islam’s remarks

GUWAHATI: “Aminul Islam is not only responsible for insulting Ahoms and indigenous communities, but some intellectuals of the state are also responsible for their silence,” said Assam health, finance and education minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Reacting to controversial remarks of All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) MLA Aminul Islam that Ahoms are not indigenous people of Assam, Dr. Sarma said “Aminul Islam spoke the same thing twice in TV talk shows. Since there was no protest, they have started to believe that people are supporting whatever they are saying. Therefore, his audacity has increased and gone further that Ahoms are not indigenous.”

“Our intellectuals are not aware to challenge their audacity. They have dared to challenge the community in which Chaolung Sukapha and Lachit Borphukan were born,” Sarma added.

Addressing a public meeting at Moirabari, Dhing legislator Aminul Islam said, “Ahoms came from Yunnan province of China-Myanmar boder. That province was never a part of India. They came from a foreign land.”
