London’s Heathrow Airport suffered the unexpected shutdown following a fire at an electricity substation on Nestles Avenue in Hayes
GUWAHATI, March 21: Heathrow Airport in London remained closed on Friday after a major fire at a nearby electrical substation sparked a major power outage, disrupting hundreds of flights and throwing travel plans of passengers into complete disarray.
Reports said at least 1,300 flights to and from Heathrow Airport were affected. The impact, reports further stated, was likely to last several days with passengers trying to reschedule their travel.
Heathrow airport suffered the unexpected shut down early Friday following the fire at the electricity substation on Nestles Avenue in Hayes.
The London Fire Brigade was called in with as many as 10 fire engines and dozens of firefighters pressed into service to douse the inferno. Around 150 people, reports said, were evacuated from nearby localities.
The blaze was brought under control by 6:28 am GMT.

“Due to a fire at an electrical substation supplying the airport, Heathrow is experiencing a significant power outage. To maintain the safety of our passengers and colleagues, Heathrow will be closed until 23h59 on 21 March,” the ‘X’ handle of Heathrow Airport stated in a post.
“Passengers are advised not to travel to the airport and should contact their airline for further information. We apologize for the inconvenience,” the post further read.
