Guwahati student who attempted suicide dies, people demand justice & arrest of school principal

Guwahati: A minor student of Class VIII from Modern English School, Odalbakra in Guwahati  who attempted suicide, passed away on Sunday.

The student attempted suicide by jumping off the school’s fifth floor at 11:30 am on December 24. 

She had sustained injuries after she jumped from the school building and was undergoing treatment in the city’ Hayat Hospital.

The family members of the student have alleged that the school principal, Jonali Das, had mentally harassed the girl student.

It has been alleged that the school principal had verbally abused the girl during the school’s Sports Week.

Immediately after being abused by the principal, the Class VIII student made a suicide attempt by jumping off the fifth floor of the school’s building.

The girl’s classmates said that she was an intelligent girl, good in studies and well behaved. Her demise sparked anger among the school students and the local people.

As the news of her death spread like wildfire, the Deori People’s Forum staged a protest and locked the school where the deceased studied.

A protest was staged with the deceased girl’s body in the Odalbakra area and in front of the Principal’s house by local people, school students and activists of various student bodies.

An activist of the All Assam Mising Students’ Union said, “We demand immediate arrest of the school Principal and all those who are responsible for pushing the girl to this extreme step. We will not let her last rites to be performed until and unless action is taken against those guilty. If the police do not take necessary action, we will launch a Statewide stir. We also urge the Chief Minister to intervene in the matter.”

An FIR has been lodged by the family members of the deceased at the Odalbakra police outpost.

According to the Police, the Principal Jonali Das is on run after the incident occurred and they are trying find out her whereabouts.
