Guwahati, December 18: With the complete withdrawal of curfew in Guwahati, the city has returned to its normal life. However, unscrupulous traders in the city are allegedly fleecing the customers in the name of supplying drinking water.
Residents of Guwahati are facing tough times as water tanker rates soared over the past few days. It has been alleged that some suppliers are charging higher rates illegally from customers for each consignment of water tanker. The dishonest water suppliers have increased Rs. 150-200 for each consignment of water tanker citing limited supply of petrol and other valuables.
The residents of Bhangagarh, Kahilipara, Kalapahar, Lalganesh, Lokhra, Khanapara, Narengi, Noonmati, Satgaon and some other parts of the city are reportedly paying Rs. 300-350 for 700 litres of water. On the other hand, unscrupulous traders are allegedly charging Rs. 600-800 for per thousand litres of drinking water.
Many city-dwellers stated that water supply of Guwahati Municipal Corporation and State Public Health Engineering Department became erratic during the curfew period in Guwahati. Therefore, they had to depend on private water suppliers, following which some suppliers are allegedly taking advantage and fleecing the customers.
