Guwahati: Mrigen Sarania who won from Ward No 29 of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) elections has been re-elected as the Mayor.

This will be three-time councilor Saranai’s second term (2016 to 2018) as the Mayor of GMC.

The Deputy Mayor will be Smita Roy, won from Ward No 22 and also from BJP.

The BJP and its ally the AGP swept GMC Polls 2022 by winning 58 seats out of the 60 wards. The AAP and the AJP won a seat each.

AAP candidate Masuna Begum won ward number 42, while AJP nominee Hukum Chand Ali secured victory in ward number one defeating the BJP candidates.

However, the main opposition Congress this time failed to open its account in the GMC elections. The Elections were held on April 22 after a gap of nine years for the 60 wards of GMC. However, the elections were conducted for 57 wards as three BJP candidates were elected uncontested.
