Speaking to the media, a protester said, “GDD Minister, Sidhartha Bhattacharya has regularized the services of 1,607 contractual employees of GMC. But, being part of the same department i.e. GDD, 54 contractual employees of GMDA were deprived of this initiative due to unknown reasons. As a result, the contractual employees are forced to undertake sit-in-demonstration in our office premises since 19th February.”

“The Assam Government has turned their back on us and no initiative has been taken to regularize our services till date,” he added.

The protesters also said that they will continue the protest for an indefinite period until their demands are met. This protest has caused inconvenience to the public of Guwahati City in matters like applying for building permission, land sale permission, and other developmental projects as the contractual employees have been continuing their strike.
