Guwahati: A nine-year-old school girl of a private school in the city died on Wednesday after collapsing during the morning assembly.
Family members alleged that the Class III student of Vidya Mandir English Medium High School, Trisha Kalita, died due to lack of oxygen support immediately after she collapsed. Her postmortem report is awaited.
Kamrup (Metro) inspector of schools Prasanna Bora said some internal health issue might have caused the death.
“According to our report, the girl collapsed inside the classroom. She was referred to GMCH by the neighbouring hospital but was brought to another private hospital where she died,” he said.
This is the second such incident in the city since August. In August, another girl student of a private school in the city died after she reportedly fell ill following a morning assembly session held in an open space on the school campus amid scorching heat.
Following the incident, the education authorities of Kamrup (Metro) district issued an advisory to the city schools not to conduct assemblies in the open in adverse weather conditions.
Trisha’s family members, however, claimed that the girl did not have any health issues.
“She (Trisha) went to the classroom directly from assembly. But soon after, a teacher hurriedly brought her to the sick room. Trisha was unconscious at that time and was having difficulty in breathing,” a schoolteacher said, adding that she was rushed to a nearby hospital in an autorickshaw. The teacher said the hospital lacked an ICU for children and was sent to another hospital but could not be saved.
The family members of the girl vented ire at the hospital where she was taken first.
“Had Trisha got oxygen support instantly, she would have been alive today,” said a family member.
