Guwahati: Army Jawan trampled to death by elephant in Narengi

An Army Jawan was killed in an elephant attack in Assam’s Guwahati on Saturday evening.

The deceased jawan has been identified as Khamliang Khap.

According to sources, Khap was attacked by a wild elephant when he was on duty at the Narengi, Satgaon camp’s DSC area 222.

Following the attack, the jawan was immediately rushed to the Basistha Base Hospital.

 However, he was declared dead there.

It may be noted that wild elephants roam freely inside the Narengi army camp area and there have been several incidents of conflict in the past.

Man-elephant conflict is rising in Assam, due to deforestation, destruction of elephant habitats and a lack of fodder.

As many as 924 people got killed and 772 people injured in man-elephant conflicts in Assam in the last 10 years.
