GUWAHATI: The number of COVID-19 positive cases is rising rapidly in Guwahati. On Monday, 598 cases were detected in Guwahati alone. On the other hand, 1927 people have been infected with COVID-19 in Guwahati in last three days.

Since June 24, 3889 COVID-19 cases have been reported in Guwahati so far. Reportedly, most of these cases are without travel history which raises concerns over community transmission in the city.

Following the spurt in cases, the Assam health department has started house-to-house tests of COVID-19 in ward number 2 (Pandu area) in Guwahati Municipality from Tuesday. The health department has been targeting to conduct 3000 tests in the particular ward in two days.

Addressing a press conference on Sunday, Assam health minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma had said that the situation in Guwahati city was alarming and may worsen if the restrictions imposed are not followed seriously by people.

By and large, all the infections reported since June 24 in Guwahati are from the community, the minister had said, indicating community transmission of the viral disease.

A two-week lockdown from June 28 to July 12 is underway in Kamrup Metropolitan district which primarily comprises the capital city.
