GUWAHATI, Nov 24: An intern doctor and two MBBS students of Gauhati Medical College and Hospital, who have been accused of entering into a brawl at a bar in Christian Basti locality of Guwahati, will face disciplinary action, GMCH authorities told News Live.

An altercation started between the trio — identified as Shrubhrasish Saikia, an intern doctor of GMCH, and MBBS students Rishikesh Bipaks and Sashanka Kashyap — at the bar over issues related to the bill they were told to pay.

The trio is alleged to have first taken law into their hands and assaulted the bar manager and a couple of the other staff. The bar employees retaliated and in the brawl that followed, the trio were injured.

As news of the brawl reached the GMCH hostels, around 15 inmates of Hostel 4 went to the bar and got involved in another heated argument with the bar authorities.

“We have taken serious exception to the incident. According to our internal investigation, an intern doctor named Shrubhrasish Saikia and two MBBS students Rishikesh Bipaks and Sashanka Kashyap had gone to the bar and were reportedly involved in an ugly brawl. While they are alleged to have strated the brawl, they were attacked later following which they were injured and had to be admitted to the hospital,” Dr Achyut Baishya, Principal, GMCH, told News Live.

“After the incident around 15 more students from Hostel 4 of GMCH went to the bar. They were not involved in the brawl but did break hostel rules by venturing out of their hostel at night. We have decided to take disciplinary action against all of them. While the three getting directly involved in the brawl will be expelled from their hostel, we have decided to rusticate them from the institution for three years,” he added.

“Such indiscipline will never be tolerated. Disciplinary action will be taken against them,” GMCH Superintendent Dr Abhijit Sarma said.
