Girl student named in Assam Agricultural University Professor’s suicide note

GUWAHATI: Dr. Abhijit Sarma, a professor of Assam Agricultural University at Jorhat who committed suicide on Tuesday had reportedly mentioned the names of several persons in his suicide note. Dr. Sarma also mentioned the name of a female student in the suicide note he left in his office at the department of Agrnomy. Professor Sarma was found hanging in his office room on Tuesday.

Jorhat superintendent of police (SP) Mrinal Talukdar informed media that everyone found in the note would come under the ambit of investigation.

According to sources, Professor Sarma was an extremely serious academician. He was the guide of the female student who is undertaking her post-graduation. He reportedly urged the student to focus seriously on studies. However, the girl lodged a complaint of harassment against Dr. Sarma. Following the complaint, the university authority ordered transfer of Sarma to Rice Research Station at Titabor. Sources revealed that the professor was anguished with the university’s decision.

On the other hand, Dean of Assam Agricultural University Dr. Jayanta Deka said that as a teacher Abhijit Sarma was immensely popular and was not involved in any immoral activities. He expressed hope of a proper investigation into Sarma’s death.

Dr. Sarma lived in the university campus with his wife and their daughter, a class ten student. His wife also works at the university as a junior scientist.
