Guwahati: An all-women weekly market has been started in Tingkhong, Dibrugarh. The sellers of this first-of-its-kind weekly market in Assam are all women.
Leaving the kitchen and house chores behind the ladies have come out to sell locally produced food items like pork, fish, chicken, vegetables etc. They also had traditional fabric, garments and other wares to sell.
The objective of the market is to support organic and local varieties of goods produced by small farmers and self-help groups in an around Tingkhong.
“There is nothing to be shy of. We will have to move forward. We will work and with our work we will move ahead,” is the statement of this group of ladies from Tingkhong. The all-women run weekly market is a fine example of empowerment of women in rural areas. The participation of women from all walks of life in Tingkhong has been quite encouraging for this new venture.
The market named as ‘Nari Shakti Samanwai Saptahik Mahila Bazar’ is organised under the Assam State Rural Livelihood Mission (ASRLM).
