GUWAHATI: Chief minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday paid tributes to the first CM of Assam and Bharat Ratna awardee Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi on his 131st birth anniversary.

“My humble tribute to Assam’s 1st Chief Minister Bharat Ratna Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi on his 131st birth anniversary. His contributions towards preserving the culture, identity and spirit of Assam, and ensuring her unity, are legendary, and shall be cherished forever,” Dr Sarma tweeted.

Born on June 6, 1890, Bordoloi was a freedom fighter, a satyagrahi and prolific orator.

Borodoloi fought bravely against the inclusion of Assam in East Bengal in 1946.

He protested against cabinet mission’s decision which grouped Assam along with East Bengal.

Bordoloi’s strong stand ensured Assam remained a part of India.

In 1999, Gopinath Bordoloi was posthumously awarded Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award of the country.
