GUWAHATI: Good news for Assam and the Northeast, as international trade route from Dhubri to various river ports of Bangladesh has been officially started.
On Thursday, the Bangladesh Assistant High Commissioner Dr. Shah Md Tanvir Monsur launched two barges (a long flat-bottomed boat for carrying freight on canals and rivers) carrying cargo from Inland Waterways Authority of India’s Dhubri river port to Bangladesh.
A consignment of 250 metric ton of stone aggregates from neighboring Bhutan was flagged off to Chilmari River Port in Bangladesh via Brahmaputra. This puts Dhubri in the international trade map and will help further strengthen India-Bangladesh business ties as both the countries can benefit from its waterways, said Dr. Monsur.
The Bangladesh Assistant High commissioner was positive that in near future the trade route can be turned into a passenger route as well.
“We hope that apart from Bhutan, stones from Meghalaya can also be transported. Dhubri can play a major role in international trade by transforming itself into Asian trade hotspots like Hong Kong, Tokyo etc,” said Dr. Monsur.
On 11 July, Indian cargo vessel MVAAI transported 1000.5 metric ton stones aggregates to Narayangaj in Bangladesh from Dhubri Jahaj Ghat run by Inland Waterways Authority of India.
