GUWAHATI, Feb 10: Security forces in Bangladesh have arrested as many as 1,308 loyalists and supporters of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina as part of a crackdown codenamed “Operation Devil Hunt”.
The arrests, reports stated, were made in just 24 hours.
The operation was launched by the Muhammad Yunus-led interim government on Saturday after several student activists were injured in incidents of vandalism at a former Awami League Minister’s home at Gazipur last week.
A government statement said the operation began after gangs “linked to the fallen autocratic regime attacked a group of students, leaving them severely injured”.
“Our target is to neutralise the pockets from where attempts are being made to destabilise the country,” Nasimul Ghani, Senior Secretary of the Home Ministry, was quoted as saying by NDTV.
