Cyclone Amphan: Guwahati witnesses heavy rain

GUWAHATI: As cyclone Amphan has moved towards north-northeast with a speed of 10 KM per hour, Guwahati has been witnessing continuous rainfall from last night. Rain has lashed the city throughout the day on Thursday. The continuous rainfall has made the city dwellers confined within the four walls of their homes.

Although after the relaxations of some lockdown norms, Guwahati was limping back to its normal life, the inclement weather has compelled the citizens to stay at home again.

According to Regional Meteorological Centre in Guwahati, light to moderate rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy , extremely heavy falls (≥20 cm) at isolated places have been expected in Assam and Meghalaya on Thursday.

Earlier on Wednesday Kamrup (Metropolitan) district administration had issued a notice that the cyclone ‘Amphan’ may hit the district at any moment. It has also alerted all the heads of line department to be ready to tackle the possible situation.

“There is a strong likelihood of a widespread effect of Cyclone. Hence, all the head of line departments may keep their officials and equipment ready to tackle any situation that may arise during and after the cyclone,” stated the notification issued by the additional deputy commissioner (ADC) and chief executive officer (CEO) of  Kamrup (Metro) District Disaster Management Authority.

Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL), forest, telecom services, fire and emergency services, SDRF, PWD building and roads departments were asked to ensure 24X7 readiness of their staff and machineries to deal with the immediate requirements.

The notification further added, “People of the district are also requested to keep themselves ready to face the cyclone and to be careful in dealing with the situation. All emergency requirements may be checked immediately and may arrange accordingly.”

The cyclonic storm has left a trail of destruction in West Bengal, Odisha and neighbouring country Bangladesh claiming several lives.
