Cotton University celebrates Yoga Day virtually

GUWAHATI: On the occasion of the International Day of Yoga, Cotton University organized an online celebration via Zoom media platform at 8 a.m. on Monday.

The event flagged off with an introduction of the event by Dr Sangeeta Barthakur, the moderator of the event, which was then followed by a welcome address by Dr Prasanta Sarma, the Director Students’ Welfare, Cotton University.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Bhabesh Chandra Goswami, during his inaugural address enthusiastically emphasized on the benefits of Yoga in everyday life and also urged the gathering to make it a regular practice. ‘We are assembled today to celebrate this day as we have realized the importance of yoga in maintaining a healthy life’ – he said in his address. This was followed by a few words from the Registrar, Prof. Diganta Kumar Das, and the Dean Students’ Welfare, Prof. Debojit Sarma who shared their respective thoughts on the occasion. Das spoke on Yoga as a thousand year old practice of Indian origin and the importance of yoga in the midst of a pandemic situation like now. Sarma quoted the Gita and said – ‘Yoga is a journey of the self, through the self, to the self.’   

The prime attraction of the event was a virtual yoga demonstration by renowned yoga expert, Ankita Borthakur. All the attending participants  performed yoga following her steps and also interacted with her virtually. During the interaction, Borthakur replied to the queries of participants on different health issues particularly stressing on those asanas which are relevant towards dealing with the Novel Coronavirus related complications.

The programme was largely attended by the members of faculty, officers, students, non-teaching staff, alumni, guests and representatives from the media via Zoom platform and official Facebook page of the University.

The vote of thanks was offered by Dr Debajyoti Barooah, the convenor of the organizing committee.
